Below is a quick and dirty list of some of the worlds top Industrial Design Consultancies.
Australia
Jones Chijoff – Run by Mike Chijoff and Carl Jones, this little consultancy is already doing great things from their offices in Footscray, Melbourne. They have designed quite a few products for various sports. They also have a fun little website.
Outerspace – With their offices in Richmond, Melbourne the outerspace team has designed successful products in many areas from esky’s (Chilly Bins) to tapware.
Blue Sky Design Group – Located in Sydney and founded in 1984, Blue Sky are an award winning industrial design consultancy with a strong track record in many areas.
Büro North – Offering Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Sculpture and Signage Büro North were responsible for the VEIL Solar Shade and have recently won a Premiers Design Mark.
The USA
IDEO – Possibly the best Industrial Design consultancy in the world. They specialise in experience design and have offices in many places, yet originated in Palo Alto in CA, USA.

Continuum – These guys are doing plenty of interesting work and have recently completed a project with Herman Miller on Healthcare seating.
Frog Design – Founded in 1969 Frog is headquartered in San Francisco, with studios in Austin, New York, San Jose, Seattle, Milan, Amsterdam, Stuttgart, and Shanghai. Frog Design is an independent division of Aricent and they also have their own magazine which you can subscribe to.
Asia
S-Point – These guys were the very first Industrial Design consultancy to appear in Shanghai.
LOE – Founded in 1995, LOE is one of China’s oldest Product Development firms.
India
Elephant Strategy + Design – Started in 1989 as a product and graphics consultancy, Elephant now specialise in design research, design and strategy, usability and, innovation and transformation. They are located in Pune, India.
Europe
IDC – Established in 1972, They done heaps of work in their 35 year history and are now investing some wicked new rapid prototyping technologies. They have just launched the UK’s first Viper SLA online quotation system.
Seymour Powell – 1561 is the number of projects they have done in their 23 year history. In that time they have written a book and even had their own TV Show, “Better by Design”.

Not to mention, Rob’s company is a start up. It is hardly a world class design consultancy at this point. I’ve heard Continuum’s just had lay offs.

JONESCHIJOFF is a start up, however the quality of design and work coming out of it is certainly world class and better than many of the ID Consultancies in Australia.
