Unfortunately this year, I have been pretty wrapped up in a few other things to get my head into gear to sort out proper Design Droplets coverage for the State of Design being held here in Melbourne.

However through a bit of luck, I did manage to secure a ticket to the opening night of the Festival, held at the Royal Exhibition Building in the Carlton Gardens. It was certainly a fabulous night and, I think, it has set a great tone and standard for the whole festival. During the evening the Design Made Trade exhibitors were able to show off their wares to the best of the Melbourne design scene (and the stragglers like me). I have to say there were some great products and people there.

Overall the quality of what was on show was excellent, with a few exceptions (although maybe they will pick up their game today during the actual Design Made Trade event), the exceptions including Charlwood Design’s stand and the Designboom Mart – both were disappointing. A couple of the shining stars that were on show on the night included interphase design’s SKOOT, KeepCup and jewellery by Melbourne based duo insnyc design. All of whom I hope to get on Design Droplets to be interviewed.

Since Design Droplets will probably have sporadic coverage of the festival this year, if you are really hungering for some extensive reviews and write ups of the events at this years State of Design, jump on over to The Design Files, a great Melbourne based blog run by Lucy (who is this years official festival blogger).
