Link Love 14 May 2009

In this weeks Link Love I would like to put emphasis on one particular link. The link to The Designer Mentoring Program on Design Sojourn. This is a fantastic and very unique initiative (it is also a fantastic PR stunt on his part) by Brian Ling, who runs Design Sojourn. Basically Brian, who is a Design Manager at a very large global company (do some googling to find out which company), will be taking designers under his wing and allow them ‘unprecedented’ access to him via a private forum. In the post it mentions that Brian will initially be giving 5 designers the opportunity to access his program for free , so I am assuming that this means down the track he will be charging money for it. Which is fair enough, as he is a very talented and busy man. However I would hope if he is going to charge for the program, he will bring in some other design greats to help mentor his students. (see Brians comment below for reason for edit) Anyway enough from me on the program. Head on over to Design Sojourn and check out all the details by click HERE. (Just a note – Brain has not asked me to endorse this in anyway, I truly think is a great initiative that is worth taking the time to check out) Now onto the rest of this weeks Link Love.

The Design Sojourn Designer Mentoring Program – read above.

50 useful Twitter tools for Writers & Researchers (& Designers) – Everyone is really starting to take noptice of Twitter. But how can it be used by Designers to benefit their design work? Maybe this link might spark some ideas.

All Said and Done – design, theology, youth, books, blogging and life by Rebbecca. I found her thoughts on AGideas an interesting contrast to my own.

International Journal of Design – interesting design resource.

AFFECT The Centre for Effective Design Research – an Industrial Design research unit in New Zealand.

Michell Design – Blog of Adam Michell a Design student. He is looking for some advice and feedback on what he has posted so far.
*Link Love is early this week as I won’t have time to do it in the next few days.

These might also interest you.

Hi Raph,

Thanks for the plug and sharing your thoughts. Just a small clarification, which I did not notice until you mentioned. Problems of blogging at 1.30am!

I like to apologize for the typo, I meant free as in availability or space as I cannot accept too many people. That plug was part of an original draft that did not get edited out. I have made the changes. Just to be transparent, the thought has crossed my mind but I have not decided if this is to be a paid program or not, or it is going to get any bigger than 5, etc. As you mentioned, too damn busy these days. Hope you can amend your post?

Thanks…and you will be in the running for sure!

Great links, I like the “all fields of design” approach of the International Journal of Design, and Id like to mention also Brians Mentoring program, which I also think is a great idea, because the designschools, at least here, are very academic, and do not give the students the mentoring they could really benefit from – from an expirienced designer working in the real world of design.

Thanks for the link love!
Read your experience of AG Ideas. Great overview of the conference. It was a bit of a mixed bag really though in hindsight, some exceptional stuff but a little too much that was disappointing.
