If you are a Melbournite then you are no doubt aware of the huge disaster that was the Southern Star (a.k.a Melbourne’s failed attempt at blatently ripping off London and other cosmopolitan cities who have such wheels). For those of you who are not familiar with the afore mentioned Southern Star then take a quick jaunt over to The Age to brush up on the story (but don’t be too long for you will miss out on much needed time to drool over this quirky, but kickarse, concept).
Created by our friends at Melbourne design studio Büro North in conjunction with thier friends Peter Bennetts and Fooch from Squint Opera. I ummed and arred over putting this up since as regular readers would be aware, at Design Droplets we tend to steer away from the overload of design porn you can find all over the net. But in the end I have decided to put it up because, well, it’s fun and freaking awesome!
In the words of Soren the following is “a greek windmill inspired sci-fi future with a ‘wind driven, solar sail energy collecting wheel, as a hub for a new fleet of flying steam powered trams’ to alleviate congestion in a newly greened Melbourne.”
So enjoy the eye candy and share your thoughts on the future of Melbourne, the Southern Star and the awesome flying trams depicted in the renderings.

Mmmm Flying Tram!

Yet another flying tram
