For the next instalment in the summer awards season, Design Droplets popped along to the launch of the 2009 Bombay Sapphire Design Discovery Awards. Held in the lush Gin Garden of Sydney’s Establishment there were, somewhat unsurprisingly, enough gin Collins and pink gin Martinis on hand to sink a small navy…
The 3-story glass atrium enclosing the bar was decked out in Bombay Sapphire blue (they even had blue hydrangeas on hand, a nanna-but-nice touch), with the dramatic height of the space forming a fabulous backdrop for the work of this year’s competition finalists, who include design duo Daniel.Emma, David Knott, Gary Galego, Helen Kontouris, Joseph Ormrod, Kain Lucas, Marcel Sigel, Rohan Nichol and Tomek Archer.

The winner of the award, to be announced by Dutch design superstar Maarten Baas at a dinner on November 18, will receive a $30,000 grant in addition to a trip to the 2010 Salone del Mobile in Milan. The four runners up will receive $2,500 while the remaining five finalists will each receive $1,000.

The exhibition will run at the Gin Garden until November 30th, before heading to venues in Melbourne and Brisbane in early 2010. The first time that the exhibition has been held outside of a gallery space, it’s a sorely-needed attempt to spread the message about emerging Australian design talent to the broader community.
