While the vast ocean that is the internet provides every designer with enough information & inspiration to fill thousands of their sketch books, sometimes you just need that fix of the physical media to fill the gaping void. In this post we take a look at 4 print magazines that every designer should be reading every once in a while.
1. Monocle
Need a monthly fix of global affairs, business, culture and design? Then look no further. In an age where print media is going the way of the dinosaur, media bureaux are firing staff and closing their doors quicker than you can say “dead like a dinosaur”. Monocle is reviving the age old practice of quality print media journalism. If you are into Design and Business with a global focus then this is the only print magazine you need.
2. Anthill Magazine
Running your own consultancy? Freelancing? Need a hit of entrepreneurial inspiration or information? Then Anthill is the mag for you. A magazine for fast growth companies that does away with the stuffy conventions of the old guard business magazines like Business Review Weekly. Anthill throws the oxymoron of’ cool business magazine’ out the window. If only this magazine were more readily available to design droplets international readers (it is Australia & NZ specific)
3. Rotman
Maybe you are after a business and innovation focused magazine that is a bit more intellectual. Rotman Magazine is produced by the Rotman School of Management in Toronto, Canada and is published three times a year. You can also get all the previous issues online in PDF for Free without even being subscribed!
4. Harvard Design Magazine
Looking for a design magazine thats more intellectual than the monthly Monument or ID Magazine? Then you’ve found it. Full of academic grade articles Harvard Design Magazine is produced by a small team from the Harvard Faculty of Design.
– A bonus that needed to be added to the list –
Curve
You may have noticed already that most of the magazines on this list are not your traditional design focused magazines. This is mainly because the majority of traditional design magazines are full of the latest greatest concepts (well actually they are now more often that not a few months out), a lot of adverts and not much else. Curve on the other hand is significantly different. Covering the field of Industrial Design, Curve is the Australian Industrial Design magazine. The only complaint is the ridiculously high price tag for each issue and the fact that its only published 4 times year. Maybe re-evaluating their target market and taking a global focus could fix these two issues? But overall it is a quality Industrial Design specific magazine.
A final a note – some of these magazines are ones that are readily available in Australia & New Zealand, finding them in other parts of the world might be difficult.
If you have a magazine that you just can’t design without a flick through every now and again, then please share it in the comments below.
