This morning, the inaugural Coffee & Connexions networking event was held at the Red Cup Café at 120 Collins Street in Melbourne.
We had a small group of seven (myself included) show up, which allowed everyone to engage in quite in-depth discussions on the current direction of several sections of the global design industry.
Much of the discussion was focused on the automotive industry and the current economic climate issues.
Some of the key discussion points included:
- GM’s Puma concept.
- Industrial Design in the current economic climate.
- Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic domes.
- Design for natural disasters, such as the recent Victorian bushfires.
- Design Strategy in the Australian automotive industry, or possible lack thereof.
- The next “China” for the industrial design industry.
Feel free to kick off some further debate or add your 2 cents worth on these issues in the comments.
Thanks to Ilan, Tony, Ben, Jesse, Nirmal and Liam for being part of the very first Design Droplets Coffee & Connexions.

Bummed that I couldn’t be there. Would have loved to have been involved in the discussion on design strategy in the Australian car industry! Perhaps we should try and organise a Sydney one some time and spread the love
Hey, thanks for organising it DD!
I really felt it was a useful meet up session. I get a bit sick of the events we go to always with a specific focus, like listening to a talk, or to generate an outcome, but I really liked C&C because we could talk about whatever interested us – to take the conversation in whatever direction we wanted. Cheers to Raph and to all those who turned up, it would be great to make it a regular event, and if you can get along I highly recommend it!b
